John Ogilby's ribbon map of the road From London to Newhaven, in Sussex. It was published in his atlas of the roads "Britannia", first edition in 1675. The road travels from London to Newhaven, and then along the coast via Brighthelmstone (Brighton) to New Shoram (Shoreham). Beacons are clearly marked, as are three gallows - beware highwaymen and smugglers! This is a hand coloured copper engraving.
